Sorin Grindeanu elected as ad interim president of the Social Democratic Party of Romania (PSD)

Sorin Grindeanu was elected as ad interim president of the Social Democratic Party of Romania (PSD) on Tuesday, May 20, 2025, in a meeting of the National Political Council of the party. Sorin Grindeanu stated after the meeting that the prevailing opinion within the PSD at this time is to engage in a constructive opposition, but that he has been given an open mandate to negotiate regarding the government.

”The PSD has been and remains the party of reason and solutions. Today, after this administrative part, which is more of an internal matter, the election of an ad interim president, we listened to many colleagues who talked about how we should act in the coming period, about public policies, because the PSD must continue on this path. We also talked about what has actually characterized us in the years of PSD activism, namely a return, if you will, to the party’s base. This does not mean that the party’s base has not been listened to until now, but I believe that a much more direct and better dialogue is necessary during this period, at a time when the mandate is to organize the party congress. The mandate is to organize the congress, and the congress must clarify all matters within the PSD. This is what we have decided today, and these are matters that will likely undergo developments in the coming period, and we will communicate them,” stated Sorin Grindeanu after the PSD National Political Council.
