Romanian’s boost defense spending, exceeds NATO goal: “We are determined to support NATO’s common defense efforts to strengthening the Eastern Flank…”

Last week, the Romanian Parliament approved an operating budget for FY2023 that designates 2.5% of GDP to bolstering defense capabilities. This increase in funding is critical to shoring up Romanian military bases and modernizing defense systems to protect Romanians and meaningfully support NATO defense efforts in the face of Russian aggression. PSD strongly supported efforts to increase the Romanian financial commitment to defense and celebrate the passage of this forward-looking budget.

PSD President Marcel Ciolacu shared the success on Twitter where he stated, “We are determined to support NATO’s common defense efforts to strengthening the Eastern Flank and will forge ahead with investments in our military capabilities.”

The agreement between NATO members to commit at least 2% of GDP to defense is necessary to ensure that the alliance maintains military readiness in the face of possible threats, and this year has been more important than ever before. Romania is a committed member of the alliance, and as the Eastern flank of the war PSD has urged the Senate and Chamber of Deputies to increase defense spending to ensure the strength of our borders and to face Russian aggression with strength.
